Speaking at the launch to an audience of Gallery Friends and invited guests he said “Stanley Spencer has always been one of my favourite artists and I am delighted to be here to see the Gallery and to open this stunning exhibition featuring the ship building paintings loaned by the Imperial War Museum. I am encouraging the national galleries to loan more of their works to regional exhibitions like this.” The Rt Hon Theresa May also attended the opening and said the Gallery’s Summer exhibition is always a highlight of the year for her. She noted that the paintings are an important record of shipbuilding and exude the toil, heat and effort of the shipbuilders. Theresa also congratulated the Gallery’s volunteers who have run the Gallery for nearly fifty years, saying that “it is The Big Society before it its time! “ more | 28/01/11 Rotary clubs in the Thames Valley are launching a marketing campaign in February to celebrate a hundred years of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland. Rotary was founded in Chicago on February 23rd 1905 and the first clubs were formed in Britain in 1911. The aim is to raise awareness of the work of Rotary through an advertising campaign on railway stations from Oxford to Langley throughout February. This will be supported by a twelve page newspaper featuring the work of Rotary at home and abroad which will be distributed to the public by Rotarians throughout the Thames Valley area, which includes Berkshire, Oxfordshire and part of Buckinghamshire and Middlesex.
