Maidenhead could receive art history lesson |
Maidenhead could soon be given an art injection, after money has become available for the commissioning of works of public art. Councillors are now discussing the possibility of using money raised from a supermarket development to create works of art educating local people about the area's history and heritage.
According to the Maidenhead Express, £5,000 has become available for the proposed paintings, as a result of the town's new Waitrose development. Local councillor Clive Baskerville told the paper: "I think Maidenhead is short of this kind of thing - it does help raise the tone of the place at a time when many people say that most shopping centres look the same." He suggested the likes of engineer Isambard Brunel, who designed Maidenhead Bridge, and Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame as personalities linked with the area that should feature in some way in the artwork. Although those were his suggestions, he has invited comments from local artists, schools and members of the public to become involved in deciding on the appropriate kind of art the town should have. |
